DC is Arun Matheswaran's take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas โ€” reimagined as a Bonnie-and-Clyde style gangster war. It arrived on August 7, 2026 with a modest โ‚น25 crore budget and has since crossed โ‚น84 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year. The headline: this is Lokesh Kanagaraj's debut as a lead actor โ€” the director of Leo and the LCU universe stepping in front of the camera.

The setup: Devadas "Das" (Lokesh Kanagaraj) is an outlaw with a personal moral code. He kills corrupt officers the system won't touch, robs a police weapons transport, and promises a murdered farmer's family he'll fund their son's education. Hiding out at a lodge, he falls for Parvathy (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy), a bar singer who is accidentally killed during a police raid โ€” shot by a commanding officer covering his own tracks. What follows is Das's escape from custody, a prison break orchestrated by Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi) โ€” a brutalised sex worker who resembles Parvathy โ€” and a bloody war against the corrupt task force hunting them.

What works: The film knows exactly what it wants to be. This is not a mass heroics film โ€” there are no over-the-top hero moments, no gravity-defying saves. The violence is raw, close, and consequential. Matheswaran, who built his name with Rocky, Saani Kaayidham and Captain Miller, shoots the action with his signature gritty realism โ€” every hit feels like it costs something. Lokesh is a revelation in the lead; he carries the screen with an effortless, understated menace. Wamiqa Gabbi is the film's fire โ€” unpredictable, fierce, and the emotional anchor of the second half.

The craft: Anirudh Ravichander delivers a career-best score โ€” the kind that amplifies every beat without begging for attention. Mukesh G's cinematography gives the film its washed-out, lived-in texture, and Prasanna GK's editing keeps the 142 minutes moving. The love track between Das and Chandra is refreshingly cool and breezy โ€” a breath of fresh air between the bloodshed.

Where it stumbles: The script, co-written by Matheswaran and Arun Ranjan, leans on a few generic choices โ€” the betrayals land predictably, and some supporting characters (the corrupt Inspector's task force) are sketched thinly. The second half's tonal shift from brooding crime drama to full-on war feels abrupt. And despite the emotional beats, the romance could have used more room to breathe.

The verdict: DC is a good entertainer and a solid one-time watch. It doesn't pretend to be more than it is โ€” a stylish, bloody, romantic crime thriller anchored by two strong performances and a fantastic score. If you're looking for mass elevation scenes and hero worship, look elsewhere. If you want raw violence, emotional grit, and a director who trusts his actors over his effects, this delivers.

Rating: 3/5 โ€” worth a watch in theatres or on the big screen; a one-time ride that leaves an impression without demanding a repeat.
